Hardships of Scarcity: Microsociology on Poor People’s Survival Strategies in Everyday Life

Basic human rights are not met in many parts of the world. Hunger, ill-health, and poor education are often part of the lives of the poor. The purpose of this study is to understand poor people\u27s sources of strength, social relations, sources of income, and perspectives as strategies to cope with poverty in everyday life. Data gathering was done through field observations and semi-structured interviews with poor and non-poor people in the Philippine town, Hagonoy. All data was codified according to recurrent and salient issues and analyzed using chiefly symbolic interactionism as the theoretical framework. The results of this study reveal that poor people suffer from stigmas. Poor people carry out various survival strategies: some strategies are creative, spiritual, and norm-breaking; social relations are important to cope with poverty. There are differences in the way poverty affects men and women due to culturally defined gender roles. The poor people in this study were marginalized into less desirable areas; because of their lack of resources they live in shanties where they have little protection. Calamities affect both the non-poor and the poor people but the latter are in a less fortunate position

Surviving Poverty in the Philippines

Basic human rights are not being met in many parts of the world. People in poverty suffer from hunger, ill-health, poor education and low standards of living which negatively affect their well-being. These reasons and poverty as a wide spread social problem that undermines the economy and development of entire nations, make poverty socially relevant and important to study. To understand how poor people experience and survive limitations in their quality of life, I came closer to their realities and observed the areas where poverty is accumulated in a town in the Philippines. I took into account the behaviours and appearances of poor people as well as listening to their stories. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyse their situations and the definitions of issues related to poverty. The objective is to gain more understanding and knowledge about poor people. This is a qualitative research in which Symbolic Interactionism is used as a framework. Data gathering includes participant and non participant observations as well as semi-structured interviews. The study reveals that poor people in addition to poverty also suffer from stigmas. Poor people implement a variety of strategies to survive, some are creative and others are norm-breaking. To cope with poverty social relations are important. There are differences in the way poverty affects women and men due to culturally defined gender roles. Religious beliefs against divorce and family planning through contraceptives contribute to more poverty among the poor people

Presupuestos : Presupuesto como herramienta de gestión y planificación al restaurante TGI FRIDAY, para el año 2014

El presente trabajo a desarrollar tiene como tema general PRESUPUESTO, en el cual se pretende demostrar que este sirve como una herramienta de gestión y planificación de gran importancia para cualquier empresa que haga uso de este en el desarrollo de los propósitos a los que desea llegar. Esta investigación tiene por objetivo general, el analizar de qué manera el presupuesto siendo una herramienta de gestión, permite darle el seguimiento adecuado a la planificación, ejecución, control y evaluación del cumplimiento de los objetivos o metas del restaurante TGI FRIDAYS. Para ello es de suma importancia primeramente conocer más acerca del presupuesto, haciendo enfoque en sus generalidades, en los procedimientos a tomar en cuenta para su correcta elaboración y la aportación que este brinda a las empresas para tomar las decisiones más acertadas a través de los resultados que se obtienen posteriores a su elaboración. La presupuestacion a realizar al restaurante TGI FRIDAYS, estará basada en los resultados del periodo 2014 posteriormente proyectado a dos años, los principales cambios que se presenten en el mercado, mismos que servirán de apoyo para hacer las debidas comparaciones al momento de obtener nuestros propios resultados. Se espera que nuestro trabajo proporcione a la dirección del restaurante herramientas que faciliten obtener un mejor desempeño en todas las áreas q funcionan en él, así como un mejor control de ingresos y gastos que se generen en cada periodo presupuestado, lo cual generara que los recursos con los que se cuentan sean mejor aprovechados. El uso del presupuesto es un método indispensable para las empresas, por lo cual este trabajo será de mucha utilidad para quienes opten al uso de la presupuestacion; presupuestos una base fundamental para cualquier decisión o meta propuesta dentro de cualquier empresa; las grandes instituciones públicas o privadas tienen muy presente la utilización de este sistemas presupuestario que al buen uso de él se deben el éxito o fracaso obtenido

Periódicos y discapacidad: conformación de una imagen

Mass media plays an important role in the formation of public opinion, therefore, representations of people with disabilities in the news media contribute to the general perceptions held about them. The purpose of this study was to analyze representations of disability in Spanish newspapers. Four newspapers were selected: El País, El Mundo, Huelva Información and Odiel, and all articles from a one year period, 05/2011 to 04/2012, were assessed for disability content. In total, 232 articles were found and were analyzed by content analysis. Although the results suggest a positive change in the way people with disabilities are represented, a serious effort is still needed to follow journalistic style guidelines which generate favorable attitudes towards disability.Los medios de comunicación desempeñan un papel importante en la formación de la opinión pública, es por ello que las representaciones de las personas con discapacidad en la prensa escrita pueden contribuir a la conformación de percepciones generales sobre ellas. El objetivo del estudio fue analizar la representación de la discapacidad en la prensa escrita. Se seleccionaron cuatro periódicos: El País, El Mundo, Huelva Información y el Odiel en los que se analizaron todas las informaciones cuyos contenidos hicieran referencia a la discapacidad a lo largo de un año (05/201104/ 2012), se encontraron 232 artículos. Pese a las indudables mejoras introducidas a través del tiempo en la representación de la discapacidad, aún se necesita un serio esfuerzo por seguir pautas de estilo periodístico que generen actitudes favorables hacia la discapacidad
